questions

  • Many of our clients have never hired a designer before working with us, so you’re in good company. We begin by having you fill out a short questionnaire and then we follow-up with a phone conversation to briefly discuss your project.

If we are a good fit for your project, then we will set up a consultation. During the consultation, we will walk through your home with you and learn about the specific needs of your design project.

After the meeting, we will create a proposal for design services with a detailed outline of the scope of work and estimate of time to complete each phase of the design work.

  • For a renovation or new build, you should contact us as soon as you start thinking about the project – do not wait until construction has started.

Bringing us in at the true beginning of the project allows us to advise on changes that could be made to the layout to make your finished project even better.

For smaller design projects or projects with a minimal amount of construction, reach out to us 6 - 12 months before you want the project to be finished. It’s always better to have more time to design and make decisions. Your project is an investment and rushing through the decision process usually leads to regret down the road.

  • Maybe. We only take on a select number of projects at one time which allows us to build a personal relationship with each client and give each project our full attention. Reach out in the contact form and we can give you our current availability. Sometimes we can take a project on right away, other times we are booked out a few months but we promise it’s worth the wait!

  • Yes. We are happy to work on a single room, whether that be a full remodel or just a refresh with a few new pieces of furniture and décor. Many of our multi-room or full home projects also begin with just one room or area. It's a great way to ease into the design relationship and establish trust with our clients.

  • Jill May Interiors doesn’t have a signature design style - we aren’t designing for us, we are designing for you!

We value a balance of light and color, but we don’t shy away bold design opportunities + we also love work with refined, minimalist palettes. It all comes down to the balance of your life in the space so that you are not being swallowed by clutter, overwhelmed by a confusing design layout, and can show your style outwardly. We are here to help you understand your personal style and craft a vision for your home that we will bring to life with you.

  • We purchase furnishings, fixtures, artwork, and accessories from a variety of sources including trade showrooms, artisans + craftsmen, online vendors, and local small businesses. We love introducing our clients to new brands and products that they aren’t familiar with – this sets your house apart from your neighbor’s house and always increases that wow factor. That being said, if you have a store or vendor you absolutely love, we’d be happy to use them in our sourcing.

  • No. We have a trusted network of professionals including builders, architects, tradespeople, and workrooms, but we are also happy to work with your preferred vendors. We’ll ask if you have any preferred vendors during our initial consultation so that we can make sure we loop those vendors into the project early on.

  • Yes! We have a seamless procurement and installation process that takes the ordering, tracking, and assembly of furniture off of your plate. Purchasing through us also gives you access to furniture, artwork, and accessories from trade-only sources.

  • That all depends on how much you would like to invest in your interiors. What are your expectations? We’ll help you to think about function and how it will continue to look over time. It’s worth considering: How many times do you want to buy the “right” furnishings?

Also, projects can be broken into manageable “chunks”—creating seamless design one room at a time.

There’s a distinct financial benefit to working with a designer: We can help you make informed choices and avoid costly mistakes.

  • A realistic budget is your best friend. We have knowledge of furniture construction and can advise on the best product for the appropriate function. Some items may have a higher up-front cost but will have a lower life-cycle cost—which makes them a better solution.

A good designer will help you choose the right pieces for your project, save you time and money by providing sound interior design advice, and help you to allocate your resources wisely.

  • Working with a designer can save you money by helping you to allocate resources wisely, eliminate decorating mistakes, and increase creative thinking.

And we know you’ll love the final result because you are involved every step of the way. It’s our job to provide great options and help you make the right selections and decisions for your lifestyle and taste.

That being said, a good professional interior designer will push you to expand your aesthetic boundaries. Our clients say that it’s the most exciting and rewarding part of interior design.

  • The process begins with an in-depth conversation about the space, who uses it and how you use it. We discuss likes and dislikes. Every step of the way, you are involved and aware of the budget. You make all the final design + purchasing decisions.

  • There are many different ways interior designers charge. In most situations designers make money on an hourly design fee (design time) and products they sell (procurement services).

We do this because the design is only a portion of the whole look. The other part is ordering the right products from a larger furnishings pool and assuming all the ordering details and responsibilities.

Shopping for the cheapest designer isn’t always going to save you money. An experienced designer may charge more but take less time to design and offer a larger selection of resources. Look for the designer that is right for you.

  • This is our area of expertise! We’ll get to know you, learn your needs, and then specify the right product for the right application. As designers, we are knowledgeable in specifying furniture, finishes, fabrics, flooring, lighting and artwork as well as adept in problem solving and space planning.

Well organized and thoughtful design creates a relaxing, functional and endlessly pleasing environment. A well-designed space feels effortless and “right” to the inhabitants. And, from a functional perspective, working with an interior designer exposes you to new products and new solutions.

  • As a business, we guarantee commercially reasonable retail pricing for all the furnishings + services we facilitate. Like any business model, we will agree in our contract on a fair pricing structure up front so that there is no uncertainty or confusion as we begin our working relationship.
